Jun. 5--The Mercury News staff won 34 awards at the Peninsula Press Club's annual competition, which recognized some of the best work by print and broadcast journalists in the Bay Area last year.
Competing against the largest newspapers in the Bay Area, the Mercury News won 16 first place awards, which were presented at a dinner Saturday in Foster City. The San Francisco Chronicle did not compete.
Mercury News columnist Scott Herhold won first place for his news and political columns while Ed Clendaniel won first place for his Mercury News editorial titled, "Arduous Road to Healthy Future."
