Article: Pilot plant is Darigold's passage to production. (Darigold Inc.) (1994 Processor of the Year)

In September 1993, Darigold Inc. changed the future of the company's R&D by investing in a universal pilot plant that simulates production processes at each of the company's 12 production facilities. In addition, the pilot plant is equipped to test new products and formulas.

"Most experiments done in the pilot plant are minor formula adjustments for cost or quality purposes," says Mike Nygaard, corporate quality assurance manager/HACCP coordinator. "It's too difficult to schedule line time at the production facilities for this type of work. Plus, the system runs very smoothly at a very small volume. We get great preliminary reads before we scale-up."
