Jun. 6--SANTA ROSA -- The harvest and grinding season has come to an end for the Rio Grande Valley sugar growers.
Steve Bearden, president and CEO of the Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers cooperative, said the 2006-2007 harvest proved to be a successful one that produced more sugar cane than last season's crops.
"We harvested more acres of sugar cane and produced more raw sugar this season than last," Bearden said. "A testament to both the growers and the sugar mill's capabilities."
The rain that fell in September and October of last year may have played a role in the higher numbers, Bearden said.
