Pope Benedict XVI is giving religion a bad name. In divorcing theology from history, he muddles the teachings of Jesus - his preferential option for the poor - and perhaps the significance of his life.
Or so it appears from the pope's recent criticism of liberation theology and his revisionist view of Latin American history, during his time in Brazil. Generally, he espouses an academic and rationalist theology that ignores insights associated with modern theology's challenge to domination systems.
