Reversing an earlier decision, Toyota Motor Corp. will not use lithium ion batteries in the redesigned Prius hybrid car due in late 2008, according to a Japanese newspaper.
Toyota suppliers were told in May that the decision to postpone the use of lithium ion batteries was made for safety reasons, according to a report in the Nikkan Kogyo.
In a statement, Toyota said the company "cannot comment'' because the report "concerns future product plans.''
In a February interview, Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe told BusinessWeek magazine that the 2008 Prius would use lithium ion batteries.
