Jun. 7--Pit bulls are reclaiming a bad reputation that some say is largely undeserved.

More people have been bitten in Reading by pit bulls already in 2007 than in any year since 2002.

But pit bulls aren't nasty by nature and become aggressive only when their owners mistreat them, said Dylan Heckart, an enforcement officer at the Humane Society of Berks County Inc., 1801 N. 11th St.

"They are great dogs and they are generally easily handled by adults and children," Heckart said. "They are extremely friendly, even with strangers, so they make terrible guard dogs.
