The increasing number of public solicitations for organ donors has reached a point where it is time for the federal government to establish national guidelines to protect the existing allocation system and the potential living donor, a government panel has recommended.
The Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Advisory Committee on Organ Transplantation (ACOT) adopted the recommendation during its semi-annual meeting in Rockville, MD in mid-May. The recommendation, which will be sent to HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt, was the sole action taken by the panel.
