In an annual rite of late spring in the southern Willamette Valley, invisible clouds of grass pollen are wafting through the air, descending on allergy sufferers and bringing itchy eyes, runny noses and general misery.
Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of the grass pollen allergy season, bookended by the Fourth of July. And, as if on cue, the amount of pollen in the air climbed dramatically over the weekend.
On May 22, the amount of pollen measured a scant five grains per cubic meter, as determined by the Allergy & Asthma Research Group in Eugene. The pollen count reached 65 grains on Saturday, then nearly doubled ...
