Jun. 8--DELRAY BEACH -- In the center of the operating room, two neurosurgeons pull and pound on the human body using instruments that look like they're from a home improvement store.
What might seem rough -- you sometimes see the patient bounce on the table -- is actually part of precision work to repair the backbone and protect the spinal cord. An inch too far and there'd be trouble.
To guide and check their work on Thursday, Drs. Lloyd Zucker and Evan Packer used a massive, 1-ton machine that wrapped its arms around their 62-year-old patient hidden beneath blue hospital sheets.
