In one drawer I have a collection of odd socks that appear to collect there of their own accord. In another there is a collection of odd nickel-cadmium cells that arrive in the same way. I keep both collections hoping to do something with them, but eventually I know they will get thrown away.
This book tells me in detail of the consequential hazards to the planet of throwing away old Ni-Cd batteries, and also to the citizen, manufacturer or retailer living in the US. For example, in Minnesota, 'a person may not place in mixed municipal solid waste a rechargeable battery' (the penalty for infringement is not given).
