Winifired Woodhull's compelling, informative study couples an analysis of francophone Maghrebian literature with an examination of French writing about the Maghreb. Her analysis ranges from Kateb Yacine's Nedjma (1954), a classic of North African literature, to Guy Hocquenguem's novel L'amour en relief (1982), which, though translated into English (Love in Relief, 1986), has received far less critical attention.
