When The New Zealanders, Maurice Shadbolt's first book (a collection of short stories), was published in 1961, reader response ranged the entire spectrum: it received good reviews in the Times Literary Supplement, the Bookman, and the Daily Telegraph in Britain, but in New Zealand it was "damned in lecture rooms, denounced from the pulpit," and "in at least one community it was removed from library shelves." Quite some reaction to the first work of fiction of an author of just twenty-six. Patrick White (then visiting Auckland) declared the collection "interesting."
