Jun. 10--My first season on the Cavs beat was the last for George Karl and World B. Free. I missed Free a lot more than Karl, who was a 34-year-old coach during that 1985-86 season. Like a lot of young men with quick success, Karl lost his focus on basketball and was obsessed about getting a new contract. He blamed me for his firing before the end of that dismal 29-53 season. The reason for Karl's anger was that I wrote that he had canceled a practice to interview for a job at the University of Pittsburgh. It was true; he just didn't want it reported.
