I admire Fr. Ted Colleton. And I would be delighted to add to his column "What to think of Purgatory" (C.I., Nov. 2006, pp. 12-14) by pointing out additional Biblical passages.
Jesus defined Purgatory in Mt. 5:25-26 and Mt. 18:21-35 as "Prison where you will not be released until you pay the last penny." Only Purgatory has the marks of true "to the last penny" justice and release. This rules out Hell-where there is true justice but no release, and also Earth-where there is release but no true justice. Besides, the word "Hades" meaning a holding place or jail, is its closest approximation and is different from the word "Gehenna" meaning Hell.
