Mexico City -- Despite opposition from Catholic church leaders, including Pope Benedict XVI himself, as well as leaders of the Anglican and Greek Orthodox churches and Mexican President Felipe Calderon, among others, Mexico City's lawmakers on April 24, 2007 approved a contentious bill to legalize abortion in their city. The measure was to take effect as soon as it was signed by the mayor, who supported the legislation. The bill requires Mexico City hospitals to commit abortions on demand during the first trimester of pregnancy and paves the way for the opening of private abortuaries.
