The bandora (sometimes "pandora") is an intriguing instrument from the English Renaissance. A finger-plucked instrument with brass wire strings, larger than a lute, and used in the bass and partly doublebass registers, its rich and resonant sound cannot be duplicated by any other instrument, early or modern. With its fine repertory, unique tone qualities, and usefulness in ensembles, the bandora deserves the attention of today's performer-scholars working to approximate the sounds and styles of the music of this period.
