Jun. 11--With costs rising and enrollment slipping, Lafayette school leaders are on the verge of asking voters to more than double the school parcel tax to stave off budget cuts.
Residents pay $132 now, but officials want to seek a $290 to $315 parcel tax renewal this November. The tax would be for seven years with an annual 3 percent increase for inflation. The revenue would make up for lost revenue from inadequate state funding and declining enrollment, and would be used to keep class sizes small, pay teachers and aides, and fund classroom technology.
