Jun. 12--The Reading fire department plans to hire 10 new firefighters this year because it has 17 vacancies and is having trouble filling open shifts by calling firefighters in on overtime, officials said Monday.
However, the hirings won't help the city follow a February agreement that settled a federal lawsuit claiming the department doesn't have enough black firefighters.
That agreement calls for aggressive recruiting, hiring and training to help the department better reflect the community, city Managing Director R. Leon Churchill Jr. told City Council in a memo Monday night.
