THE FOLLOWING COMMENTARY ON THE BIBLICAL story known as "the binding of Isaac," which is published here for the first time, was recently discovered in the geniza of the old synagogue in Troyes, France, a mid-sized city southeast of Paris, on the Seine River. It is worth noting that a geniza--meaning, literally, "hiding place"--is an out of the way space in a synagogue, typically an attic or anoversized crawl space, in which prayer books and other sacred writings that are falling apart or disintegrating are placed for storage.
