America's taste for ethnic foods drives specialty shred sales

People still have time to cook. They just don't have time to shred cheese.

The proof is on the pegs. Supermarkets have been expanding their shredded cheese sections in recent years to accommodate a growing range of shred varieties designed for specific food applications such as nachos, pasta, pizza and tacos. Sales reflect the trend, too: Growth in the natural shredded cheese category was 9.7% for a recent 52-week period, and a healthy 6.6% in 1993, according to Information Resources Inc.
