AL-ANDALUS Alchemy Al-Andalus 195
It is interesting, though not surprising, that Al-Andalus the ensemble name of Tarik & Julia Banzi--cites Radio Tarifa as an influence. They are, in many ways, attempting to merge the same cross-cultural soundforms into their musical landscape. (Indeed, that is the gist of their album title, Alchemy.) A touch of Arabia, centered around Tarik's oud playing and the rolling percussion, mingling with Ladino headnods wrapped into an umbrella Andalusian fold centered in southern Spain. The Romany citations are probably pointing to the pre-flamenco Indian roots in that region, while the African ones are not heard on this recording, but ...
