USC professor Robin Kelley dubbed "The Internationale" possibly "the only song to change the world," but it seems more an example of a failed dream. It was penned by Eugene Pottier in 1871, as he was fleeing the breakup of the Paris Commune. It was sung at the world's first May Day celebration--in the United States in 1886--but never caught traction in North America. It became the anthem of both international socialist and anarchist movements, the first of which was long on nobility but short on building a global movement, and the second of which attracted repression like honey ...
