Of the same generation as Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Dave Van Ronk, Eric Von Schmidt grew up in Westport, CT. His father Harold was a well known illustrator and painter, and from an early age Eric developed a love of history and painting. Music entered his life when he heard Leadbelly on the radio in the late '40s. Soon he got a guitar and was trying out "Goodnight Irene" on a girl at school named Irene. Stationed near Washington, D.C. in the army in the early '50s, Eric discovered the folk music archives at the Library of Congress. He was drawn to the raw vitality of these artists and absorbed their spirit into his music.
