Introduction.

This present volume featuring refereed articles on the theme, "Imaginary Places," originally delivered at the thirtieth annual Colloquium on Literature and Film, September 15-17, 2005, reveals, I think, some of the many ways in which to interpret the challenge set before our participants. Obviously, describing life on Mars, let us say, presents the opportunity to push the envelope, but we have also included papers on such considerably more mundane places as Jerusalem and East Berlin, real cities, even real streets, and yet the original depictions have been intentionally warped, however subtly.
