Jun. 13--NEW BREMEN -- Slowly but surely, the crane hoisted each large block of white oak. Methodically, the pieces were guided into place. As the gates slid into place, the year-long makeover of Lock One along the Miami and Erie Canal inched closer to completion.
The old gates, also made of white oak, were removed last June. The installation of the new gates, built by Hoge Lumber Co. in New Knoxville, brings the town landmark one step closer to resembling its 1910 appearance, when the old gates were installed.
