Sultan Qaboos Bin Said called on the majlis al-shura (consultative council) to play a joint role with government in developing the sultanate in a speech to the opening session of its second term on 26 December.
The membership of the majlis has been increased to 80 from 59 and women, selected from the capital area only, have joined the body for the first time. It was rounded in 1992.
Sultan Qaboos said the increased size of the majlis was one the three key elements of its second session. "This will produce, with God's permission, a greater variety of ideas, opinions and deliberations, resulting in the nourishment and enrichment of the majlis' recommendations," ...
