Regarding the claim in "Society revitalizes Fort Point" in Currents (April/May 2007) that the first capital of New France, Fort Ste. Marie de Grace, was built in 1632: There were two colonies in New France--Canada and Acadia. Each was administered separately by Paris. In 1632, Quebec had been the "capital" (much too grand a word; "administrative centre" or "regional seat" would probably be sounder) of Canada for decades. La Have [the later name for Fort Ste. Marie de Grace] was the "capital" of Acadia for four years from 1632. Before and after that period, Port Royal was the "capital"--also founded by Champlain (and Pierre du Gua, Sieur de Monts).
