TOKYO, June 15 Asia Pulse - A research group from the Osaka University Joining and Welding Research Institute has developed a way to generate large volumes of hydrogen gas from wood chips and other wood scrap.
To produce the hydrogen gas, discarded wood is placed in a chamber filled with argon gas and a high-frequency discharge is produced. When steam heated to 170 degree Celsius is jetted into the chamber, the discharge turns it into a plasma of hydrogen and oxygen ions. This plasma reacts with carbon in the wood, yielding carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas.
