After six years of fighting cancer with unexpected success, Sol LeWitt died on April 8th at New York Hospital, age 78. He finished his last drawing less than four days earlier. His death leaves a huge void in the world of art and among his hundreds of friends. I knew him for almost 50 years.
Around 1959-60, LeWitt and I both had flunky jobs at MOMA. He was at the night desk, where he read voraciously and passed the books on to his friends. He/we worked through the French nouveau roman writers (Alain Robbe Grillet, Nathalie Sarraute, et al.) whose "objective" prose seemed to parallel aspects of a Minimalism that hadn't quite happened yet but was gestating in the ...
