ANAHEIM, CALIF. -- Manufacturers including Zenith Electronics Corp., Hewlett-Packard Corp. and LANCity used last week's Western Cable Show to preview high-speed cable modems designed to connect home or business PCs over broadband cable networks.
Cable operators are eager to put an RF modem to work so they can add telecommuting and online service access to their product mix, but, to date, they have been less than overwhelmed by existing modem performance in the muddy sub-low band -- an area riddled with interference and ingress that can essentially squelch an upstream signal without any warning.
