Jun. 16--OAKMONT, Pa. -- The legacy of Gifford "Giff" Hampton Jr., who was general manager of Portage Country Club when he died in 1969 at age 49, is being carried on this weekend at the U.S. Open.
Chris Hampton, 28, the fourth generation of Hamptons in the golf business, has been assistant general manager of Oakmont Country Club for four years. The St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and Kent State University graduate runs the clubhouse, handling the food, bar and kitchen staff, which takes on a whole new dimension as the club hosts the national championship.
