Jun. 17--The creative competition between arts festivals in Omaha and Des Moines gets a break this year.
For 23 years, the Omaha Summer Arts Festival was the biggest art fair in the region, attracting the area's best artists and collectors. Then, in 1998, Des Moines city officials pumped up their Art in the Park event and made their own large-scale event, the Des Moines Arts Festival.
It was scheduled on the same weekend as Omaha's festival.
Since then, the Des Moines event has grown to attract more than twice as many visitors as Omaha and a thousand more artist applicants.
