The first thing that springs to mind when most people think of Sardinia is the luxurious Costa Smeralda in the north of the island, where rich Italians holidaying from the mainland mingle with celebrities such as Liz Hurley, Tom Cruise and Rod Stewart.
Travel south, however, and you will find a much more affordable Sardinia with beaches, scenery and archaeological ruins to rival the north but much cheaper property, and accessed by no-frills airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair flying to the capital Cagliari.
