"Off with her head"? Or "the show must go on"? Alexander Zevin's essay on Marie Antoinette is quite bracing, while Sandy Fitterman-Lewis on The Queen is thoughtful, especially when discussing Elizabeth's ability to work the press. The juxtaposition was truly enjoyable, like being at a very good dinner party.
Now that we're onto after-dinner drinks, I would like to ask Zevin what's so "cringe-inducing" about the title of Caroline Weber's new book, Queen of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution. I, for one, love that title. Weber treats her subject (!) as a person, rather than a political symbol. Because of this, it's possible for non-royalty to ...
