A front-page news story in The New York Times on February 17, 2007 described the "roaring backlash" roused by a lobbying campaign for state-mandated use of a vaccine that Merck & Co. has developed against human papilloma virus (HPV), a virus associated with cervical cancer. (1) Fueling the backlash in part was the rush-rush aspect of the campaign.
