In the mid 1600s, European fur traders newly established on Hudson Bay and James Bay, its southern appendix, met several Cree bands from the surrounding country. These were not tribal peoples in the usual sense of the word. Their bands formed and reformed fluidly as food acquisition, successful hunting, fishing and trade opportunities presented themselves.

There were some pronounced dialect distinctions which did make for distinct bands, but even this was easily overcome by the harsh necessities demanded by their challenging environment.
