Despite its title, the book is about Central and Eastern Europe's ethnic cleansing. It covers ethnic cleansing, genocide, and the Holocaust in the three main Eastern European empires (Ottoman, Habsburg, Russian) as well as East Germany, the Caucasus, and post-1923 Turkey. The presentation features vivid accounts of suffering, destruction, and pillage by eyewitnesses.
