In a project that may help jump-start industry interest in deploying the new technology, the Department of Homeland Security announced Monday it is planning to invest up to $25 million to install high-temperature superconductor wires in Consolidated Edison Inc.'s underground power line network in New York City to provide a "secure super grid" for Wall Street.

The initiative, dubbed "Project Hydra" by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is aimed at preventing potentially disruptive power surges and providing multiple pathways for electricity to continue to flow to Wall Street in case of damage to Con Ed's grid.
