NEW YORK--Feb. 21--U.S.-flag carriers in the trade between Europe and the United States are urging American trade officials not to impose penalties on European Union carriers, fearing that the EU carriers then would retaliate against U.S. lines in a broadening trade war.
The U.S. Trade Representative's office is deciding whether to impose sanctions on European-based steamship lines as retaliation against European Union restrictions on banana imports. Sanctions being considered include imposing additional fees on EU-based carriers for port calls in the United States or limiting those carriers' access to U.S. ports, a USTR spokeswoman said.
