Judge Reggie Walton received scores of letters from friends of Scooter Libby, pleading with the jurist to have mercy on the former top White House staffer, who was convicted of lying under oath in the Valerie Plame investigation. In their account, Libby is a faithful friend, a doting father, an avid reader, a sparkling conversationalist and so on _ all of which were meant to persuade the judge not to break a butterfly on a wheel by sending Libby to jail.
