Jun. 19--TAVARES -- A year ago, the agency responsible for protecting abused and neglected children in Lake County was assailed as one of the worst in the state by a watchdog organization.
The National Coalition for Child Protection Reform said vulnerable children in Lake and the four other counties that make up the Department of Children & Families' District 13 had "the worst of all worlds."
They were more likely than children elsewhere in Florida to be taken from their families, and yet less likely to be kept safe.
But Monday, Richard Wexler, the organization's executive director, heaped praise on the district ...
