Jun. 19--WEST PALM BEACH -- Palm Beach County commissioners Tuesday morning threatened to snub a state legislative mandate and keep touch-screen voting machines -- unless the state agrees to fully fund the switch to paper ballots.
The state has earmarked $5.1 million to Palm Beach County to buy almost 800 optical-scan machines, one for every precinct and early voting site. The switch from touch-screen machines to paper ballots is scheduled to take place next summer.
But Elections Supervisor Arthur Anderson told commissioners it would cost $5.9 million more, a tab left to county taxpayers.
