Goldfrank's book is a detailed examination of the causes of the Crimean War, an appalling conflict that cost the lives of at least 800,000 people, a number greater than the casualties in the American Civil War. Goldfrank emphasizes that domestic events in the participating nations, including particularly the revolutions of 1848, played a crucial role in bringing about the war.
