Jun. 20--Chicken coops alongside doghouses within city limits?

One Janesville resident, Kay Meyer, has asked city council members to consider allowing residents to keep hens.

"It seems like hens would be quieter and less of a nuisance than some dogs are a[bar]," Meyer wrote in an e-mail to council President George Brunner.

But Janesville's animal ordinances, written in the '50s and '60s, forbid chickens in the city except in outlying areas. City attorney Wald Klimczyk said the city has developed so much that few places would qualify as "outlying."
