The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is pushing for a requirement that latex condom manufacturers put expiration dates on each condom package. Recently, the agency also began banning the sale of unapproved novelty condoms that can be used as a prophylactic.
The agency's proposal to require expiration dates on condoms was expected to appear in the Federal Register late last year. However, political changes in Washington have caused an indefinite delay, FDA officials say, adding that the expiration proposal was linked to the FDA's politically sensitive condom labeling proposal.
