To illustrate how Joyce Bourassa approaches running, perhaps it's best to look at how she tackles another pursuit that takes just as much endurance and patience: parenting.
Told in 2002 she was unable to have children, Bourassa and her husband, Todd, adopted two girls from Russia - Piper was 6 at the time, and Julia was 4 1/2.
Shortly after completing her first Ironman Triathlon in September 2002, Bourassa found out the doctors hadn't been exactly right: She was pregnant with a son.
