Jun. 21--Lafayette voters who this month turned down a parcel tax for road repairs are facing another tax request -- this time for the schools.

The Lafayette school board is placing a $313 parcel tax request, with a 3 percent annual increase for inflation, on the Nov. 6 ballot to keep the district in the black. The tax would be for seven years starting in June 2008 and include an exemption for anyone older than 65.

The amount is more than double what residents pay now. Officials say they need the revenue to cover rising costs, keep programs whole as enrollment dips and compete with other districts for teachers.
