Jun. 21--The Florida Board of Cosmetology has approved a new rule that would relax state inspection requirements for beauty and nail salons, drawing criticism from consumer advocates and lawmakers who have pressed for tighter regulations.

Citing lack of resources and other issues, staff from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation asked the board during a June 3 meeting to approve the new rule, which calls for routine inspections to be conducted every two years instead of once a year as is now mandated by law.
