Dateline: Music City, USA. Where is that? Nashville, Tennessee, of course. Though the city has many industries, none has brought it as much national and international fame as its country music industry. How did Nashville become Music City?
Nashville's music roots run deep to 1893, when the New York Symphony Orchestra (now the New York Philharmonic) performed at Ryman Auditorium, now known as the "Mother Church of Country Music." But Nashville made its name in country music in 1925 with the launch of a radio show, the WSM Barn Dance, soon renamed the Grand Ole Opry. It didn't take long before hundreds of fans came to the live performances for the radio shows.
