ELY, Minn. _ The map is recessed into the middle of the table. Mostly blue and white, the map represents the top of the world. The frozen Arctic Ocean. The North Pole. The upper fringes of Siberia, Greenland and Canada's High Arctic islands.
Across the map, a line of black ink has been drawn from Siberia, north to the North Pole, then south again to one of those Canadian islands.
To those gathered around the table on this 15-below-zero morning in February, the map provides a sobering reminder of what lies just ahead in their lives.
